Artist Bio

My work ranges from intimate interiors to still life, florals, landscapes, abstracts and the figure. I was introduced to painting over 25 years ago and have since dedicated myself to learn the craft.

Abstracts and the abstraction of an image is new for me.  The concepts of change, loss, abandonment, hope, love, renewal and home influence my work, which is infused with a sense of familiarity.  I find I have come full circle to rediscover more fully, my life experiences.  My travels throughout Southern Africa, the British Isles and South America and growing up in South Africa  provide endless inspiration to explore different directions in my work.  My sources of inspiration come from tribal and primitive patterns, the patterns of birds and animals, the ocean, my garden, patterns of light in spaces and the bold and sensitive world of color.

Through childhood and as a young adult I experienced multiple life moves which led to transgressions, but also transformations. Transitions between continents, between and within cities, schools and friends, meant many arrivals, departures, hello’s and painful goodbyes.  I learnt to let go and move on, which left me with a feeling of inbetweeness.  I settled in the United States and then in myself, and so began the reminiscing of places people and the all encompassing concept of home.

Diaries, sketchbooks, working from life and old photographs all contribute to the development of images. I apply many layers, seeking openness, space and light to reveal the history behind and between the layers.  Color, pattern, shape, texture, line and other visual elements all stem from significant links to nature and with the convergence of my personal near and distant past.

I paint to experience and feel the joy and challenge of discovery.  This challenge to simplify the complexities of painting and drawing gives me focus, keeps me centered, engaged and absorbed in a playful, mindful process.  This challenge has become a life pursuit.

I educated myself thru independent study, taking classes and workshops with many different artists and I delved into all genres.  I studied the greats including the American impressionists and Tonalist.  I spent many hours doing plein-air and then began to experiment with the figure.

Workshops with Dan Thompson, Robert Liberace, Diane Rappisi and Jackie Reeves strengthened my drawing skills.  Drawing will always be a challenge especially perspective, however, I keep torturing myself with interiors, and architecture.
